The Fourth Plinth Powerpoint slides...

For this final brief we were given the task of designing and developing an interest in the world around us. We were to start by formulating opinions and think of something that makes us tick. Working is groups of two we were to put ideas together for the time we would spend on the plinth.I worked with Lisa and we chose to do a Jenga plinth where we would have a women's team and a male team and pick people out at random from the street to come up and play a giant game of Jenga. We thought about all the safety issues like using a netting around the plinth just incase anybody fell and also a ladder to get up there. We would also make the Jenga out of foam so people wouldn't hurt themselves. Finally, we would take a picture of everybody that took part in the Jenga plinth and use their pictures to be put up around the plinth to say that they had been a part of it.
6 events and 6 locations - Final Design...
Here is my final design for the 6 events and 6 locations brief. i chose to keep it simple by using the United Kingdom outline and a musical note and a microphone to represent a music festival in the UK. I like the fact that there is only black as a colour and there is no other colours needed to understand what the merged design is about. Also I like the fact that it is simplistic and effective.
Making my cake presentation...
For this brief we had to work in pairs, so I worked with my boyfriend Chris. We were to record a diary and record all eventualities pertaining to the following problem. I chose to present this as a Powerpoint presentation.
1. Find yourself a recipe.
2. Buy the ingredients we needed.
3. Bake the cake.
4. Make the cake look as mouthwateringly edible as we could.
I chose to use a recipe out of a very old baking book i had as a child, it's called the 'Marble Cake'. We made two to see which one would look the best to take in to present to the group and the judges. Our cake consisted of flour (normal and self- raising), caster sugar, baking powder, eggs, margarine, vanilla essence, red food colouring, chocolate, cocoa powder, milk and lots of sweets.
As you can probably see form the photographs we went a little overboard with the sweets and were still left with some left over after making two cakes! We weighed everything out properly and then mixed it all together in high raised baking tin but put dollops of the 3 different bowls in different places then used a knife and made the figure of 8 to create a marble effect, this then went in the oven for an hour and came out not brilliantly because my little Sister opened the door of the oven whilst it was baking causing part of the cake to collapse.. not impressed.. however.. Overall we had lots of fun working together and I thoroughly enjoyed it... And it tasted good!

Pecha Kucha slide 1...
For our Pecha Kucha presentation we were to tell the group about the "things" that make us tick. The objective was to show staff and peers what is "doing it for you" right now and why.Normally a presenter shows 20 images for 20 seconds a piece, for a total time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds.
For this brief we had to present 10 slides for 20 seconds a piece, for a total time of 3 minutes and 20 seconds - no longer, no shorter.
The 10 slides had to consist of (in our opinion) a good and bad example of the following design areas:
An advert: This could be a print or moving image.
A Logo/ Symbol/ Identity.
Editorial: A double page spread.
A poster for an event.
Use of typography.
This is my first slide above:
Good logo:
I'm going to start off by explaining why I like the Open University logo... What I enjoy the most about this design is the simplicity (the 'O' inside the 'OU') it looks almost like it has a glass effect which it never used to have. To me it looks like there is a lot of potential to push this logo further in the future. Also, it does to me give off the impression that there is a lot of opportunity at this University as it is crisp, clean and simplistic.
Pecha Kucha slide 2...
Bad Logo:The logo that I have chosen not to be a huge fan of is the Ebay logo. It does the job in standing out, as people all over the world know this logo when they see it straight away. However, the reason as to why I do not like is because the colours are in my opinion boring, and the type, and the way the letters overlap is not clean and crisp which is how I would like my logos to be.
Pecha Kucha slide 3...
Bad double page spread:I do not agree with the design on this double page spread graphic editorial. I seem to think there is far too much going on for two pages. In my opinion the colours should be changed in opacity by fading it in to the background a little so the reader is able to focus on the text a bit more rather than getting lost because everything is all over the place!
Pecha Kucha slide 4...
Good double page spread:I do like this double page spread on the Mercedes Benz fashion week of male models... I'm sure some of you will agree with me! I like the perfect layout of the models on the right hand side and I also like the way the text has been set out at the bottom of the page and also the text at the sides of the page facing inwards. I think it looks very professional and clean. I love it! (and the bodies!)
Pecha Kucha slide 5...
Good Poster:I really like this poster, I got given it by one of my friends a while ago who plays at Dubstep raves. The genre of music Dubstep is becoming big in both the UK and the USA. This particular flyer was based at the super club in Blackpool called Syndicate. It is in my opinion possibly one of the best posters i have seen advertised for the session. All the colours compliment each other in a weird way, but i think this is OK because it is a weird theme. I think that tertiary colours of the tree go well with the vibrant reds, yellows and greens. It also looks as tho it represents some kind of cultural flag mostly Bolivia or Ghana, as these are the colours of the flags that are included in this poster.
Pecha Kucha slide 6...
Bad Poster:The film poster for the Sex and the city movie did not appeal to me very much for the simple fact that i think that it bored me. Sex and the City is about four girls that live in New York that have good jobs and have a good glamorous social life. I think that it could have been a little more over the top as that is what their lives are like. In nearly every episode they are bound to do shopping, all four of them. However, the poster only shows 1 main character which I think is a bit wrong. However, I do like the colour scheme of the black and pink together.
Pecha Kucha slide 7...
Bad Typography:Here is an example of bad typography... I'm not quite sure if you can see it properly but I found this on the Internet under "bad typography"... it's word art... need I say more? It's one of a series of signs that Bracknell Borough Council have stuck to their vehicles. From a distance it looks like some kind of two tone squiggle. I give this 0/10 for effort and effect.
Pecha Kucha slide 8...
Good Typhography:Iconic celebrities rendered in typeface, using whatever font works. Folha de S. Paulo newspaper in Brazil used these images to advertise the movie posters they included in Sunday editions. In my opinion this design is visually exciting and I like the type itself as it looks sophisticated and flowing with the mix of serifs and sans serifs. I like the fact they have used the font to make a picture of Marilyn Monroe, it is very interesting to see how the designer has done it.
Pecha Kucha slide 9...
Good Advert:This advert for me has to be one of the most genius adverts ever made. As a smoker myself, I completely understand the concept the NHS is trying to give by being 'hooked' on smoking. I think that this advert is clever as it has the pain/ fear/ shock factor to make people want to do something about their smoking habit.
Pecha Kucha slide 10...
Bad Advert:Now, I don't know about everyone here, but the crazy frog was for me one of the most annoying, irritating adverts going in 2005. I found that it was the sixth most complained about advert of 2005. Mobile phones was what this particular image and noise was advertised for. But the high pitched blue frog making weird noises did nothing for me!
